That the band still exists today is thanks entirely to founder member Malcolm Mason. He's responsible for resurrecting it after it went into premature and short-lived retirement, and for bringing together one of its most successful line-ups. From the soul band Captain Flint he recruited John Stubbs - a man who looks like a Hells Angel and sings like a Fallen Angel and is far better known to his legion of fans as Stubby. And he brought o n board accomplished steel player Geoff Betsworth who'd been in the band Harper Valley. 'It was with Stubby and Geoff that Lemon Grass really went to the top of the British country music scene', Malcolm says now. 'That's the line-up that most people would remember. For two years running we were voted top British trio in the Country Music Round-Up and we also brought out three very successful albums.' The third of those albums, True Brit featured a song called 'A Breath Is All It takes' by Geoff Betsworth. Its beautiful lyrics and heart-string tugging melody made it the number one country single in the UK. The more humorous side of the band brought them success stateside, when Malcolm's song 'Bingo Cowboy', a rather wry look at those clubs which seem to fit the bands in between the bingo sessions, charted in America. A few years farther on down the line, Stubby's a solo artist now, but he still stays at Malcolm's house when he's appearing anywhere nearby - and Geoff lives just a few miles away in a Cumbrian seaside town where he's still involved with music. Meanwhile Lemon 'I've always liked having a Steel player in a country band and when Geoff left to concentrate on his studio based work, Colin Gibson joined us. He'd worked with Harper Valley and Craig Duggan and I knew he was good. Which has to be a masterpiece in understatement that only a father could achieve. Caroline Charters has one of the best voices in country music today, whether she's singing the modern day songs of the Dixie Chicks and Shania - or the classics of Patsy Cline. I bet loads of people have been amazed on first hearing Caroline sing, that so much voice could be contained in one small person! But if the personnel have changed considerably over the years, Malcolm has worked hard to keep a thread of continuity going, to ensure that the essential Lemon Grass sound survives. 'It's a sound that I like. It's a modern country sound and if we go back into the 60's and 70's to pick up a song from there, we give it the modern country treatment and I think we've established a Lemon Grass kind of sound on most of the material that we do.' |

| 'SOMEWHERE TONIGHT' - LEMON
GRASS 2003 is getting off to the best possible start for lovers of country music, with the news that one of our top bands has released a brand new CD. SOMEWHERE TONIGHT takes Lemon Grass right back where they belong - to the very heart of all that's best about country. The band have chosen songs which demonstrate the richness and variety of country music - ranging from the good old boy humour of "Stranger In My Mirror" to the heart-tugging pathos of 'Soft Place To Fall'. There's a salute to great country artists over the years, with a version of 'I Fall To Pieces' by Caroline Mason that Patsy Cline herself would surely applaud - Malcolm Mason's easy laid-back style is just the ticket for a trip to Jimmy Buffet's 'Margaritaville' - and Colin Gibson lays his steel guitar aside to demonstrate real vocal skills on Vince Gill's classic 'If You Ever'. It's been a while since the last Lemon Grass CD - far loo long in the opinion of their many fans around the country, but SOMEWHERE TONIGHT will prove it's been worth the wait. | Reviews it's been a while since there has been a new album form Lemon Grass but this was worth waiting for. Caroline's lovely clear voice shines through, and Malcolm is as always, at his best. It is good to hear Colin taking a turn in singing as well as his fine steel playing. All songs are a great choice - very well sung, showing why this band has been at the top of British Country Music for so many years... Brigitte Strachan Country Music & Dance Scotland .. the album is a good collection of covers from the likes of Patsy Cline, Becky Hobbs, Alison Moorer .. Malcolm, Caroline, Colin and Derek do a really good job with the songs... Stewart Fenwick - Central FM It seems a long time since I heard a CD from Lemon Grass, so I was looking forward to this latest offering. Ttiere are twelve tracks of mostly well known country songs that Lemon Grass love tfie most This was recorded at Lemon Grass Studios in Abbeytown, Cumbria, with Malcolm Mason on guitar, lead and harmony vocals, his daughter Caroline Mason, on keyboards, lead and harmony vocals, Colin Gibson on pedal steel, lead and harmony vocals and Derrick Spence on fiddle. Caroline has a lovely voice that blends well with her father's and I liked her version of 'I Fall To Pieces' and 'Jones On The Jukebox'. Malcolm does full justice to the Randy Travis song 'Stranger In the Mirror1 and the George Strait song Write This Down', but my pick of the CD is the Alan Jackson number There Goes', which I found to be excellent. This album also features songs from the likes of Vince Gill (If You Ever), Rodney Crowell (Somewhere Tonight), and Allison Moorer (Soft Place To Fall), so there is definitely a good selection of songs to suit any country music lover and I enjoyed listening to this from start to finish. ....Dave Walker - Cross Country Magazine Malcolm Mason, lead and harmony vocals and guitar, Caroline Mason, lead and harmony vocals and keyboard, Colm Gibson, ioad and harmony vocals and pedal steel, Derrick Spence, fiddle, plus Da.vid Mason on guitars on "Soft Place To Fall Produced in then-own studios in Cumbria. A lovely album, 1 enjoyed it, particularly '"Somewhere Tonight" sung by Caroline, who has a very nice voice, the Tex Mex "Margaritaville" sung by Malcolm, "Dirty Little Town" a duet between Malcolm and Caroline, "Write This Down" sung'by Malcolm, who has a good voice for George Strait songs, and Caroline's beautiful interpretation of the AUison Moorer song "Soft Place To Fall" from the movie "The Horse Whisperer". Lovely io see Lemon Grass back and I hope they will do some gigs down this Sue McCarthy Southern Country |
