| Okeh Wranglers roots lie close to the pioneering rockabilly styles of 1950's masters such as Carl Perkins, and Roy Orbison's original band, The Teen kings - acoustic rhythm guitar and bass, with a strong beat centred around guitar, in the fashion of Chet Atkins (among others). Add to this equation country fiddle, accordion, steel guitar and a second lead guitar, and the potential is there for some fairly off the wall rocking country music. Finally things evolved into a full family band (around 1994) including Pete jnr. on steel guitar with Louise taking over on accordion. The setup was completed when Irene joined in 1996, on steel (with Pete jnr. going over to drums). |

He had soon learnt quite a selection of songs and, at the age of 13, decided to learn a new instrument - the Harmonica. In the summer of 2001, Richard wrote his first country song, Whole Life In A Shoebox, about a tramp who carries all his photos and memories in an old shoebox and tells his story to passers by as he makes his way down the never-ending dusty roads. Eventually meeting with a woman, he discovers she is leading much the same life as himself and they set off together and spend many years walking down the 'dusty roads' together, carrying their shoeboxes and telling their tales to people that they meet. In July 2002, Richard took his first booking as a country music artist, at 'The Covered Wagon CMC' at North Scarle. Trading with the Natives were formed in the autumn of 1989. Initially a six-piece, the band presented a contemporary edge, illustrating not only the instrumental talents of the band but also a distinctive vocal/harmony sound - something that they still concentrate on today. At that time they were one of the few British country bands playing predominantly modern material. The Natives became a five piece in October 1991, settling on a line-up featuring a female vocalist. The band's first cassette, "Restless", was released in October 1992. Appearances at both the Americana and Strumpshaw Festivals and successful mini tours of the west country and Yorkshire followed, as well as appearances at a number of the holiday camp festivals. The summer of 1994 culminated with The Natives' inclusion in the "Way Out West" Records release "The Best of New British Country - Declaration of Independence".
he Natives have since released an album entitled "Return of the Natives" which is available via their website or www.mjmusicshop.co.uk. |
| Turner West This is the debut album from new Irish - English collaboration ‘Turner West' but you'd swear it was forged in the studios of Nashville. From the almost Hi-tech Toby Keith snarlings of ‘Computer say's no', ‘She's more Man than me' & swamp meets rockabilly feel of ‘Speed Dating' (free download), to the bluegrass fiddle / dobro drenched ‘Lock me in this Heaven'. which wouldn't disgrace an Alison Krauss album, this is a fine cross section of contemporary country music. Through the Vince Gill ballad styling of ‘If this is what it takes' and ‘Real Love', singer Barry Owen's voice seems to inject each track with just the right expression and emotion; listen to the quietly reflective 'As the years go by,' which is matched by some equally soulful dobro and Telecaster guitar playing. |
